Welcome and FAQ
Hello, one and all, and welcome to the very first installment of White Dwarf Rabbit Hole, the English-speaking Internet's only exchange exclusively for fan fiction based on science fiction and fantasy literature. The AO3 collection is still being ironed out; in the meantime, have the rules and FAQ as they currently stand.

FAQ
How many nominations are we allowed? And what about requests versus offers?
You are allowed a minimum of three and a maximum of ten nominations with two to six characters apiece.
Later, you will request four to ten canons and offer five to ten canons. You'll be matched to another writer on the basis of your requests and to a third person on the basis of your offers.
What do I need to sign up?
You need an AO3 accountand nothing moreto participate in the signing up and posting. The Dreamwidth community is for announcements and discussion.
How does signing up work?
When sign-up time comes, there will be a Dreamwidth post linking to the sign-up forms on AO3.
Who is the moderator, and how do I contact them?
My AO3 handle is Sunchales; on Dreamwidth, I'm Tentaclesock. Don't let the absence of personal posts on my Dreamwidth journal fool you; I'll still answer any question you pose there. My e-mail address is buckve13 AT yahoo DOT com.
What is the schedule for the exchange?
Brainstorming post (on Dreamwidth): April 30th
Nominations: May 7th to May 16th
Sign-ups: May 17th to May 29th
Assignments go out: June 7th
Default deadline: July 23rd
Posting deadline: July 30th, 11:59 pm (Eastern Standard Time)
Reveals: August 15th
What's the character matching like?
Matching is AND, and you must request at least one character during the sign-up period. (The earlier version of the FAQ stated that at least two character nominations were required, but I realize now that that isn't necessary.)
However, this exchange promises to be small, so if the current settings do not produce a satisfactory number of matches, then matching will be changed to OR.
Speaking of optional details, what are they?
When you sign up in the AO3 form, you can include information about your likes and dislikes so the writer can get an idea of what you want out of your fic. If you fill in this box, don't map out the entire story, but please do mention what you're interested in and what you don't care for (which is especially useful if you have particular squicks or triggers).
If you have a LiveJournal or Dreamwidth account, then you can also write a letter explaining your preferences at greater length and link to it in your sign-up or your AO3 profile. Make sure that this letter, should you decide to write one, is not hidden from public view in any way.
How many stories do I have to write?
You need write only one story, even if the person you're matched to has ten requests on their sign-up. Furthermore, you're allowed to write in fandoms you didn't offer if your recipient requests multiple fandoms for which you'd like to write.
What if I can't finish my assignment in time?
Just contact me before the default date (via e-mail or on my journal), and I'll give you a new assignment, if that's at all possible.
What sort of canons are eligible?
The canon must be a work of literature, not a movie, television program, comic, game, or Web series. Nor may it be a novelization of a work that began as a movie, television, comic, game, or Web series. Occasionally, a work will have parallel canons, as in the cases of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and 2001: A Space Odyssey, and in such events, only the literary forms of those canons are eligible. In any case, Star Trek, Star Wars, and Warhammer 40K novels are not eligible.
What if I'm unsure if the book I want to nominate is appropriate for the exchange?
Use your discretion in determining whether or not your canon is SFF. Books that were published before fantasy became a distinct genre are absolutely eligible, as long as they use supernatural elements. Some books fall into fantasy/science fiction and literary categories simultaneously (TV Tropes's list of Lit Fic has many entries that we would call SFF), and these are still eligible. Similarly, works of horror fiction are fine as long as the horror is supernatural (or science-fictional) rather than "human" or mundane. For example, Silence of the Lambs would not be eligible for this exchange, but virtually any ghost or demon story (as long as it was in literary format) would.
Do fairy tales count?
Stories of folkloric origin are not eligible; that's what Once Upon a Fic, Night on Fic Mountain, and Yuletide are for. However, fairy tales of literary origin (such as the works of Hans Christian Andersen) and literature based on fairy tales (such as Evangeline Walton's Mabinogion tetralogy) are.
Why is it called White Dwarf Rabbit Hole?
Think about it.
The brainstorming post will start tomorrow.
Rules
- Stories must be based on an original literary work (be it a novel, short story, or series) of science fiction, fantasy, or, in some cases, horror. For more on these classifications, see the final three questions in the FAQ.
- Your story must be at least a thousand words.
- If you're a talented artist who wants to pepper their fanfic with some visual appeal, play to your strengths. Art is an acceptable supplement to a submission, but said submission must be a story.
- Submit your story before the deadline, or else default before the default deadline. However, if you finish your story after defaulting, no one will object if you post your work to the collection.
- Do not do anything that might give your recipient a clue about who is writing for them. Don't write about your assignment in a public community, journal, or forum.

I think I can allow that under the same conditions that would permit nominations of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy or 2001: A Space Odyssey.
